LANDMANNALAUGAR WINTER SAFARI

LANDMANNALAUGAR, WINTER SAFARI

MOUNTAIN CABIN, NATURAL HOT SPRINGS, NORTHERN LIGHTS, HEKLA VOLCANO

Day 1.

We pick you up at your accomodation in Reykjavik.  From there we drive east towards the south coast of Iceland.  We stop at the black sandy beach of the south coast with the often rough surf from the Atlantic ocean hammering the sand 365 days of the year.
The next land to the south being the Antarctic on the opposite side of the globe. We continue east for a while passing trough small villages before we turn north and start driving inland towards the
highlands.  With Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano, on our right we head further inland until we reach our destination, Landmannalaugar.  Here we have the opportunity to go for short or long hikes, slide down steep hills on small but super fast sledges, walk on snowshoes or just relax. Afterwards we can soak in a natural hot pool and perhaps admire the countless stars and the fantastic display of Northern lights often visible in the area.  We stay overnight in a basic but very cosy mountain cabin and enjoy a traditional Icelandic dinner, cooked on a barbecue by your guide.

SUPER JEEP TOUR

During the winter months the Icelandic Highlands are covered with a thick layer of snow.  In order to be able to drive in the area we need a specially modified Super jeep and expert drivers.  In some cases the weather is bad, high winds, heavy snowfalls, blizzards with zero visibility.  Then we rely on the GPS navigational systems in the super jeeps and our drivers decades of experience travelling in rough conditions.

This truly adds a new dimension to this great adventure!!!

WINTER FUN, EXPEDITION

Day 2.

Today we drive back through the highlands towards civilization.  We leave Landmannalaugar cabin early in order to have plenty of time to get back.  The weather will most likely have changed and we face new and different conditions from the day before.  That means MORE FUN!

Depending on the time we have when we reach the lower areas we might check out some of the natural pearls on the south-west corner of Iceland, Geysir hot spring, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National park.
