Arrive in Iceland. A preperation day in Reykjavík.
A bike ride around Reykjavik in the afternoon.
BIKING IN WEST FJORDS OF ICELAND
We drive to Barðaströnd coast on the northern side of Breiðafjörður bay. Here we take out the bikes and ride them along the fjords towards Hotel Flokalundur. The roads in the west fjords can be anything from asphalt roads to rugged gravel roads. Today the roads are all quite good, either asphalt or smooth gravel roads with some potholes.
PERFECT FOR BIKING
Perfect for biking. We go around beautiful fjords, across low mountains and down smooth hills. On the steepest parts it is possible to jump on board the support vehicle in order to enjoy the ride down on the bikes. In the afternoon we can soak in a natural hot pool close to our accommodation right on the edge of one of the fjords.
THE VIEWS FROM THE MOUNTAINS DOWN TO THE FJORDS ON A CLEAR DAY ARE UNBELIEVABLE AND BREATH TAKING
We head out on the mountain road towards Arnarfjörður (Eagle fjord). We can either ride the bikes up the mountains or drive up and bike down. The roads are mostly smooth gravel roads with potholes. The views from the mountains down to the fjords on a clear day are unbelievable and breath taking. We bike to one of the fishing villages in the area and stay there for the next two nights. We might even go by a natural hot pool, perfect for those who want to jump in for a nice and relaxing bath.
LATRABJARG CLIFF, THE WESTERN MOST POINT OF ICELAND
Today our destination is Látrabjarg, the western most point of Iceland and a 444 m hight cliff. Here you will most likely be able to get up close and personal with a few puffins. On our way trough the area we can use the bikes as much as we feel like. The roads are a bit rougher than the two days before but still very good for riding the bikes. Back to the hotel in the afternoon with a possible bath in a local natural pool.
THIS RATHER RUGGED ROAD HAS IN SOME AREAS LITERALLY BEEN CARVED INTO THE MOUNTAINS
We start the day by driving back up into the mountains. Then we ride the bikes down into another fjord, passing Dynjandi, by many considered the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland.
From Dynjandi we head for the magnificent and unique road leading from Arnarfjörður fjord to Dýrafjörður fjord. This rather rugged road has in some areas literally been carved into the mountains, it takes us down to sea level and up into steep hills. From Dýrafjörður fjord we continue driving/biking to Ísafjörður village, the capital of the area. We stay in Ísafjörður for two nights.
REMOTE AREA OF HORNSTRANDIR
Today it is possible for those who want to give the bikes a break and find other things to do. We can go deep sea fishing, hiking, we can take a boat ride into the remote area of Hornstrandir and other fun things. It is also possible just to relax after long days on the bikes and strolle around the Village meeting the locals. For those who want to ride the bikes we take a trip to Hnífsdalur and Bolungavik villages. In Bolungavik we will see a replica of an old fishing outpost, typical for this area.
We fly back to Reykjavikin the morning.
